On every turn, draw a landscape tile and decide where it fits into the growing map. You can then strategically place one of your followers to claim a road, city, monastery or field.

The challenge is knowing where and when to place your limited followers. Complete your features to score points, compete for valuable territories and try to outmaneuver your opponents.

Build the Medieval Countryside

Carcassonne starts with a single tile. As players take turns drawing and placing tiles, the landscape gradually grows into a connected medieval countryside.

Each tile can contain different combinations of cities, roads, monasteries and fields. You must place each tile so that its landscape features connect correctly with the tiles already on the table.

This simple rule creates surprisingly interesting strategic decisions as the map develops.

Place Your Meeples Strategically

After placing a tile, you may choose to deploy one of your followers, also known as a meeple.

Depending on where you place it, your follower can become a knight, thief, monk or farmer. Each role scores points differently.

However, your supply of followers is limited. Sending one meeple onto the board may give you valuable points, but it also means that follower is unavailable until the feature is completed and returned to you.

Managing your followers is therefore just as important as placing the tiles themselves.

Build Cities, Roads & Monasteries

Complete cities to score points from your knights. Connect roads to score points from your thieves. Surround monasteries with tiles to score points from your monks.

Fields provide another way to earn points, making the placement of farmers an important long-term decision.

As the landscape grows, players can also compete over the same features, making tile placement and follower placement highly interactive.

Easy to Learn, Strategic to Master

Carcassonne has a straightforward turn structure:

1. Draw a landscape tile.
2. Place the tile so that its features connect correctly.
3. Optionally place a follower.
4. Score completed features.
5. Return followers from completed features to your supply.

The rules are simple, but every tile can create new opportunities and challenges.

You might complete your own city, extend an opponent’s road, block another player’s plans or create an opportunity to compete for a valuable territory.

The River & The Abbot

This edition includes the River and Abbot mini-expansions.

The River provides additional landscape tiles that can be used to create the starting river section of the map.

The Abbot introduces special Abbot meeples that can be placed on monasteries and gardens, adding another strategic option to your turns.
