In Aurum, players compete to master the art of transforming base metals into gold. But this is no ordinary trick-taking game. Instead of following suit, players must follow a completely different rule: you cannot play a base-metal suit that has already been played in the trick.

Before each round begins, players predict how many tricks they expect to win. During the round, carefully choose which cards to play, collect Gold and adapt your strategy as the available suits disappear.

A Fresh Twist on Trick-Taking

Aurum takes the familiar idea of trick-taking and turns it on its head.

Normally, trick-taking games often require players to follow the suit that was led. In Aurum, you must do the opposite. Once a base-metal suit has appeared in a trick, that suit cannot be played again during that trick.

This unusual rule forces you to constantly think about which cards your opponents may still have and which suits will remain available.

Bid on Your Tricks

At the beginning of each round, players bid on the number of tricks they believe they will win.

Your bid becomes an important part of your scoring strategy. Match your bid exactly and you can earn double the value of your bid. Exceed your bid and you still earn points, but missing your bid completely means you earn no points from it.

Knowing when to make an ambitious bid and when to play conservatively is a key part of the game.

Turn Base Metals Into Gold

Gold is more than just a theme in Aurum — it is an important part of the strategy.

The player who plays the lowest non-Gold card in a trick can gain a Gold card matching that card’s value, when available. Gold cards can be valuable points in your collection and can also be played as trump cards.

This creates an interesting choice: should you use Gold to influence the current round, or save it in your collection for points?

Use Gold to Change Your Bid

Gold cards can also be used to swap your current bid with a card from your hand.

This allows you to adjust your strategy as the round develops. You might increase your bid, reduce it, change the suit involved or deliberately alter the way the round progresses.

Good timing can make the difference between a missed opportunity and a valuable Gold Nugget.

Different at 3 and 4 Players

Aurum supports 3–4 players.

With four players, the game is played as two teams of two, with teammates competing together. With three players, everyone plays individually.

This gives the game a different strategic feel depending on the number of people around the table.

How to Play

1. Deal the base-metal cards to the players.
2. Players bid on how many tricks they expect to win.
3. The first player leads a trick using a valid base-metal card.
4. Players must play a base-metal suit that has not already appeared in that trick.
5. The highest-numbered card wins the trick.
6. Gold cards act as trump and can win over base-metal cards.
7. The player who played the lowest non-Gold card may gain a matching Gold card.
8. Continue playing until the round ends.
9. Score points based on your bid and collected Gold.
10. The player or team that earns the required Gold Nugget wins the game.

Scoring Your Alchemical Success

Your bid matters greatly when scoring.

• Match your bid exactly: Score double your bid value.
• Win more tricks than your bid: Score points equal to your bid.
• Fail to reach your bid: Receive no points from your bid.
• Collected Gold: Gold cards remaining in your collection provide additional points.

The player or team with the most points in a round earns a Gold Nugget. The first player or team to collect 2 Gold Nuggets wins the game.
