Sheriff of Nottingham Card Game is a social bluffing and negotiation game where players compete to earn the most coins by successfully bringing goods into the market.

Each round, one player becomes the Sheriff while the others act as merchants. Merchants secretly place goods into their bags and declare what they are carrying.

The Sheriff then has an important choice: inspect a bag or let it pass.

If the Sheriff opens a bag and finds undeclared or illegal goods, the merchant may have to pay a penalty. But there is a catch—the Sheriff can also lose money by opening a bag that contains exactly what was declared.

This creates the heart of the game: bluffing and reading the other players.

Maybe your bag really contains the goods you declared. Maybe you are hiding something valuable. Or perhaps you are deliberately making your story suspicious to convince the Sheriff to leave you alone.

How to Play Sheriff of Nottingham

At the beginning of a round, players prepare their goods and place selected cards into their merchant bags.

Each merchant then declares what they are bringing into Nottingham. You must tell the Sheriff what type and quantity of goods are in your bag.

But you are not required to tell the whole truth!

You can attempt to hide valuable or restricted goods inside your bag while declaring something else. The Sheriff then decides whether to inspect your bag.

If your declaration is accurate and the Sheriff opens your bag, the Sheriff may have to compensate you. If the Sheriff discovers undeclared goods, you may have to pay a penalty.

This creates an interesting psychological battle. The Sheriff wants to catch dishonest merchants without wasting money inspecting honest ones. Merchants want to sneak valuable goods through without attracting attention.

After each player has had a turn as Sheriff, the game continues until the required rounds are completed. Players then calculate their money and goods to determine who has become the most successful merchant.
